Define the Procurement Task

Diesel vs electric forklift decisions should be based on the load, route, duty cycle and site rules. Record the maximum and typical load, load centre, lift height, aisle, floor, ramp, indoor or outdoor segments, moves per shift, operating hours and refuelling or charging access.

Diesel and electric are power-system choices. Neither label alone proves capacity, gradeability, runtime, emissions compliance, maintenance cost or availability for a particular model.

Compare the Operating Conditions

Decision area Diesel review Electric review
Route Surface, slope, ventilation and traffic requirements Surface, slope, indoor/outdoor transition and charging access
Duty cycle Operating hours, refuelling and service access Operating hours, charging time and battery-change plan
Site conditions Noise, exhaust, fuel handling and local rules Noise, battery handling, charging area and local rules
Load Capacity at actual load centre and lift height Capacity at actual load centre and lift height

Do not reuse claims about battery life, maintenance savings, rapid refuelling, heavy-load capability or total cost unless the exact model, duty cycle and source document support them.

Evidence to Request

  • Model data sheet and configuration drawing.
  • Capacity chart at the proposed load centre and lift height.
  • Engine or battery documentation and operating limits.
  • Tyre, gradeability, braking and route requirements.
  • Maintenance, charging or refuelling instructions.
  • Emissions, noise or certification documents required in the destination market.

RFQ Checklist

  1. Load range, dimensions, support method and attachment details.
  2. Indoor/outdoor route, floor, ramp and ventilation conditions.
  3. Moves per shift, travel distance and operating hours.
  4. Charging or refuelling access and service expectations.
  5. Destination country and required compliance documents.
  6. Written supplier comparison for the proposed configuration.

Safety and Evidence Boundary

Powered industrial truck training, inspections, traffic separation and operating controls should follow the equipment manual and applicable local requirements. OSHA’s powered industrial truck guidance is a general reference and is not a product approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is diesel always better for heavy loads?

No. The load, route, lift height, duty cycle, emissions rules and exact model capacity must be reviewed together.

Is electric always cheaper to operate?

No universal cost conclusion should be made without local energy, charging, maintenance and duty-cycle data.

What makes a comparison useful?

Use the same load centre, lift height, route, duty cycle and documentation requirements for both proposed configurations.

Request a comparison: review the listed diesel forklift category and listed electric forklift category, then send the operating profile through the procurement enquiry form.
